The Bulgarian music industry is not just a sphere of “cultural subsidies”, but a powerful economic engine with an annual volume of 145 million euros. This is revealed by the data from a large-scale national study of the sector, presented today in Sofia by the Association of Independent Music Performers and Producers (ANMIP) and the KANTAR agency.
“We sincerely hope that this study will be another step towards changing the way institutions view music – not as an expense, but as a strategic investment and part of the country’s economy. The scale of the market shows potential for real growth, which has remained invisible to public policies until now.”
The new economic reality: Growth above forecasts
The report proves that the market is developing at a sustainable double-digit pace, exceeding public expectations. At the heart of this “music economy” are the expenditures of end users, who form 80% of the market. Particularly impressive is the rise of streaming services, which have tripled their volume in five years, reaching over 9.5 million euros per year.
Concerts – the backbone of the industry
The data is categorical: live music is the main pillar of the sector. The sale of tickets for concerts and festivals generates as much as 57% of all revenues in the industry. This segment not only brings over half of the economic value, but also entails employment and added value for a number of accompanying businesses. In parallel, revenues from copyright and related rights (PROFON and Musicauthor) have also increased by 19% and 37% respectively over the last three years, which is a clear signal of professionalization of the market.
Lack of coordination, not potential
KANTAR’s analysis emphasizes that with a purposeful state architecture and synchronization between institutions, Bulgaria has the capacity to triple its international music potential. The main conclusion is that the sector has the resources for strong global exports, but needs coordinated support to realize this growth on the world stage.
Research Methodology
The results are the result of a comprehensive analysis by KANTAR, including a nationally representative consumer survey, expert interviews with leading figures from the music and financial worlds, as well as a detailed review of public statistics and financial reports.
